Note: The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), enacted on July 4, 2025, has restored the option for U.S. businesses to fully deduct domestic R&D expenses in the year they are incurred, for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024. This reinstates the immediate expensing treatment that was in place for decades before the TCJA changes.
Many UX research activities (user interviews, usability testing, journey mapping, survey design) can qualify as part of R&D expenses for tax purposes—if they directly relate to product innovation or development for a new or improved function, performance, reliability, or quality.
